Day in the Life - Winter 2015

Image
I wasn't sure I would do another Day in the Life so soon, but if I've learned anything these last 5+ weeks, it's that time is scarily fleeting with a newborn, and I want to bottle up as many memories as I can. Even the not-so-pretty ones. So here it goes! Wednesday, January 21, 2015 Carter is 5 weeks, 5 days old. Jon and I are...old. 2:00am | I wake to crying and realize I am on the couch. It takes me a minute to remember why I'm downstairs and not in bed. Oh yes, Jon woke me shortly before midnight to tell me that Carter was sound asleep in his bouncer downstairs, but that he himself needed to get to bed (he works, so I try to take on nighttime duties). So I stumbled downstairs and crashed on the couch. Carter is now crying, 5 hours after his last feeding! Pretty remarkable. I grab the munchkin, chuckle at his adorable quivering lower lip, and get myself situated on the couch to nurse. He screams as I am just not moving fast enough for his liking, and starts ...

A holiday recap

Image
(Better late than never, eh? Blogging (or showering, for that matter) is no easy task with a newborn, so I'm just grateful to have pieced this together over the last several weeks and it's still January). This year, the holidays were a whole new whirlwind for us. As our due date approached last month, I started wondering if we would even be partaking in many of our holiday plans. Fortunately, Carter arrived early enough that made our plans feasible. Not easy, and totally exhausting, but feasible. And I'm so grateful. This recap will be a tad late, but whatever. I have a newborn. I've been busy. We spent Christmas Eve with Jon's family. His grandma barely said hello before demanding we hand over her newest great-grandson. Seeing her hold him brought tears to my eyes. I wish my own grandparents were able to meet Carter, but I know they are watching out for him from somewhere special. Jon played proud Papa Bear, following anyone that was holding Carter to whateve...

One month

Image
One month ago, this little man entered our lives. Wow. This month has been a whirlwind, just like his arrival was. Getting to know Carter. Adjusting to life with a baby. Learning how to survive on little sleep. Running around for various holiday events. It's all been fast. I'm looking forward to things quieting down a bit. What can I say about Carter at this first milestone? He is everything I dreamed of, and more. Overall, he is a very sweet little boy. As long as he is fed, dry, and gets sleep, he is a happy camper. And held (his latest preference). He's growing like a weed, and looking back at his 1-week photos he seems almost unrecognizable. I weighed him (and me) the other day and calculated him to be at least 9.5 pounds. That's up 2 pounds since birth, 2.5 since he left the hospital. I have no clue if this is at a faster than normal pace or not, but yeah. He's growing. He's now wearing 3 mo clothing and size 1 diapers. We inherited clothing from f...

December 2014

Image
Phew. I made it. 365 photos, and only cheating twice I think. And I just finished up a photo album that captures all of these photos for official keepsake, so I'm feeling major relief right now. (And fatigue, but that's another story). Clearly, something big happened this month. But impressive enough, Carter is not in every single daily photo since he was born. Okaaaay, all but two, and one of them was of his adorable cousin that was home visiting us. But still. If I did this project in 2015, I think I'd end up with 365 photos of Carter. That wouldn't be bad, but I need a break from this stressful project. The End.

Motherhood, so far

Image
Carter is 3 weeks old, and I can't really wrap my brain around that one. Wasn't it just yesterday that I was waddling around with this kid constantly hiccuping and kicking my organs? It really is amazing how instantly your life changes with the birth of a child. And how quickly they change day by day. I mean, really? Motherhood, oh motherhood. It's everything I dreamed of, and yet also so very unexpected in many ways. I thought I'd know a lot what it'd be like based on observing friends and family in the role, but I also predicted there was a lot I wouldn't (couldn't) know until I was there...and I was right. I won't go so far to say that I'm totally rocking this new gig, but I have to say I feel I'm adjusting *fairly* well. We are all in one piece, healthy and happy. That is an accomplishment. We won't go into the many tearful moments I've had, at least not yet. (I look dreadful here...the aftermath of labor and delivery and a...
